This morning ( late morning) I received a phone call from the school counselor. my first thought is that this would be in reference to last weeks calls about Abate. Well... hmmm... no. This was about Fantu.
"Mrs. Hennessy" she said, "we just found out today that 7th graders that failed the reading portion of the TAKS (curse word in this house) will be required to attend summer school. It starts tomorrow at 8:00 AM."
Reading TAKS is mostly word definitions. Hey State of Texas, she's only just really learned to speak English in the past two years! She's just now figuring out how to carry on a conversation that she actually can follow without getting totally confused. Why just the other night while watching Caleb's baseball game she exclaimed while eating a "Snicker Bar" that "Mom this tastes like a penis!" WHAT! "No wait.... peanuts"
Ok so maybe she coulds use some extra schooling this summer on her language skills - but freekin TAKS drills AUGH!
She at least doesn't have a TAKS retest to miss out on. I'm really testing the water already by having Abate sit out his re-test.
What has happened to our schools. How can they teach our kids when they don't even know what's going on within their own walls?
