District 19AAA 8th grade Boys Champion - Abate Hennessy! He came in first place with a time of 12 min. 31 sec. I know the video is very shaky but I was so excited, and it was quite crowded near the finish line. I just felt like telling everyone to move out of my way - that's my son winning this race! He won the race by around 45 seconds over the 2nd and 3rd place finishers. He finished so quickly they were barely ready at the finish line. The lead racer is led by a 4 wheel "gator". Abate kept catching up to it and they would have to speed up. He thought it would be pretty cool to catch it. I don't know how he can get out there and run like he does. It was near record temps yesterday - high was officially 89f, and there wasn't any breeze. It was miserable just standing around.
Fantu also raced with the 7th grade girls. She did really well. I'm not sure where she placed, but it was in the middle of the pack where she seems to be most comfortable running. She knows she'll never be the distance runner that Abate is, but wait until short track season in the spring - she is a brilliant sprinter and should do well in the 200m range distances.
I'm happy that Cross Country season has ended for another year. The early morning practices and out-of-town meets get a bit rough. But it was all well worth it. What a high that Abate and well all of us are on right now knowing that we have the champion right here in our house!
