Growing Up

This past week has been a busy one. Each of us in our own way were worn out, and feeling the stress physically. Abate had a stomach bug most of the week that he had a hard time shaking off. I made him stay home from school on Wednesday after a light night because of an out of town soccer game. I could see it in him how bad he felt. But he was determined to not let it stop him. His schedule is hectic. He's up at 6:30, gets dropped at school at 7:15, school lets out at 3:30, the it's soccer practice until 6:00 or a game on Tuesdays and Fridays, often not home until after 11:00. He also has soccer practice on Saturday mornings. This week also saw the start of track season. Abate wasn't sure if he would be able to do it to as the practices are after school at the same time as soccer. Coach Kelly wasn't going to let him off that easily, he searched Abate out this week and told him he needs to practice on his own time. He is to run 6 miles a week, try to work on sprints and of course find the time in his schedule to attend the track meets every other week. He of course has to do all this and maintain his grades. I worry that he is taking on too much, but he did two sports in the Autumn and still maintained A's and B's in his studies. I'm sure he can keep it up this time. As I said before he is an over-achiever.

Fantu's progress since her surgery had been going quite slow. She was just afraid to straighten her leg and do the stretching exercises she's supposed to do. She was also using her crutches far more than she was supposed to. She was at the Physical therapist on Friday and has shown a lot of improvement. She has hardly touched her crutches while at home all weekend. Was hurting a bit last night and had to put ice on it last night. She did seem better today.

One conversation the kids keep revisiting is birthdays and just how old are they really? They are honestly about as clueless as we are. One thing we are sure about is that their birth certificates are wrong. They don't seem to mind that we celebrate their birthday on a day that most likely isn't the actual day. What matters to them is that it is a special day to celebrate them, a day that they are special, the center of attention, and that we celebrate that they are in this world. But the one thing that does bother them is that they don't know exactly how old they are. Fantu thinks she's older than stated but she is starting to realize it isn't as far off as she had thought. Abate finally admitted that even though he got to celebrate his fifteenth birthday he probably isn't that old. Are their birthdays so far off the mark that it will cause problems.... no I really don't think so. At the most they are off by 6-8 months.
As Fantu told Carrie the other day when Carrie asked her if she was going to grow some more, Fantu replied, “ yes I will be grown up”.
