Today is New Year's Day in Ethiopia (Ethiopian Orthodox Calendar). The new year rings in 2002 on their calendar. Celebrations in Ethiopia last for several days. The children bang drums and go out and sing for money. A large bonfire is also lit. Sheep will be slaughtered and roast as part of a large feast.
The celebrations at our home will be much quieter. I will be cooking Siga Wat (Beef slow cooked with Berbere). Fantu braided her hair in traditional corn-rows for today, and I'm sure she will be sharing with her classmates how the day will be celebrated in Ethiopia. She is very proud of her culture and heritage.
Tomorrow will bring a much larger party as Abate celebrates his 13th birthday! A TEENAGER! OMG! Alan is supposed to take him golfing, but there is a 70% chance of rain. We are hopeful though that there will be enough of a break that they can squeeze a game in. Abate is so excited, he's had a very thrilling week and has been the center of attention at school after his excellent result at the track meet. He's all fired up now to go out and win next week! It's next Wednesday in Hico.
Happy New Year! Melkam Addis Amet
